D's 3yr check up

Demitri had his three year check up on 9/20. He is 37.5 pounds and 40 inches. They also did a vision test which was the cutest thing that I have ever seen. I wish that I had brought my camera but I forgot it but D looked adorable covering one eye and reading the shapes off of the wall. When he had to say star, he would say "shooting star". The doctor also did a hearing test and he got vaccination for hepatitis A and a flu shot.

I brought up my concerns about Demitri being pigeon toed and the doc watched him walk and said it is very minor and does not warrant anything being done. Hmmm.

I also mentioned his allergies...keep giving him Claritin.

The doc also said that his tongue is healing beautifully.

Have to bring a urine sameple back in.

We got a yellow lollypop and we were off.

D's trip to the ER

Demitri decided it was a good idea to climb on the nightstand. Just as I was telling him to get down, he fell and bit his tongue. The result was a 2cm laceration that needed 3 stitches. We had to sedate him to get the stitces in but the other choice was 2 weeks of letting the tongue heal on its own. No thanks. He did really well but had a minor allergic reaction to the ketamine that they used to sedate him. His face got all swollen and blotchy. I still can't believe my son has had two sets of stitches before he turned three. I think I am going to be in the ER a lot in the next 16 years.

D came down with the first pox on Sunday. I can happily say that almost all signs of the pox are gone. When our pedi said that breakthru chicken pox were mild he was serious. D was pretty itch and had a fever but he was a trooper. I am super proud of my little man. He kicked that chicken to the curb.

Sigh, the pox are no fun but luckily D is a model patient. He listens to me when I say "No scratching". He is keeping himself occupied in the house and the yard. I don't think I could ask for a better kid...well there is the sleeping issue but I guess we won't get into that here.

My little man ...my little vaccinated man...has been attacked by the chicken pox montser. How can this be??? How can a kid who has been poked and prodded by needles in order to become immune still get the nasty disease? Well, its called BREAKTHROUGH CHICKEN POX , my pediatrician says he doesnt see it too often but I have spoken to a few mothers today alone that have had vaccinated kids get the pox more than once.

Good news: Breakthrough chicken pox is usually milder than regular chicken pox. Woohoo for us.

Here is a picture of Demitri as we waited in the outer waiting room at the pediatrician today. We had to be taken in thru the file room. Demitri insisted on wearing his helmet, he said that it needed a checkup too.

Our good friend Gracie has been fighting breast cancer in the most courageous way. She just recently had surgery so Demitri made her a card. I provided the stickers but everything else was all him. I think he did a FAB job!

Demitri and my dad are BFF's. They love to do boy things together like play with tools and dig and talk about things that I don't understand. My dad has really been a wonderful support for Demitri since Joe has left and I will never be able to thank him enough. Demitri LOVES construction. Loves does not really explain his obsession with all things construction. He has a DVD about a construction site and he knows most of the names of the trucks and he just LOVES trucks and dirt and rocks. There is a new Home Depot being built not too far from us. My dad has been taking D to the site every Saturday to monitor the progress. The second picture is them looking in at the Home Depot. That day a digger drove over to them and lifted the bucket with rocks in it and waved to them. The third picture is D showing me what happened when he got home that day. D is still talking about it. D treasures his time with Pa. Thanks Pa! We love you.

Demitri was very excited to see the Easter Bunny or as he calls him the Eazy Bunny. He had a bunch of goodies to show the bunny including a Santa ornament , a backhoe and last years picture. I dont know what happened, he was smiling until the moment he sat on the seat.

Haircut #2= Success

The haircut went much smoother this time. Demitri remember where we were going. He remembered the cool train set and he remembered Jessica, who is so good with him and who I really like. I also think she does a good job on his hair. He cried a little bit but we brought his own DVD from home so he watched his construction dvd and was happy. He actually stayed in the firetruck this time.

My mom took me to see Wicked for my birthday. I have always loved musicals and this was no exception. Wicked tells the story of Elpheba, the future Wicked Witch of the West and her relationship Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. The story will make you laugh, cry and leave you wanting to see it again. It is playing indefinitely here in LA so if you get a chance you should go and see it.

I am grateful for my son. I am grateful for so many other things but Demitri is my number one. I promise that following weeks will not all be about him but this has been a hard week and this is what I am feeling. Two seconds before I took this photo Demitri walked up to me with the two flowers and said " look mama, roses!" I am grateful that I have a healthy and intelligent son who amazes me more every day.

Meet Firetruck

We rescued a two year old dog from the shelter and Demitri named her Firetruck. Yes, you read it correctly and I typed it correctly. Her name is Firetruck. I tried to talk Demitri into all of his favorite cartoon characters but he did not want a Dora, a Tasha or a Uniqua. Our dog is named Firetruck!

Firetruck is a spitfire. Already she is very loyal to me and Demitri and even my mom but if somebody else comes to the door or walks by her on the street, she is ready to attack. She has quite the little bark on her which she kept well hidden at the shelter.

Stitches Out!

The cool dude was ready for a day out on the town...little did he know that it involved a trip to Dr. Yu's office.As we pulled into the parking lot , D stated that we were at Dr. Yu's house. LOL. Here he is waiting in the exam room.
D was a model patient. Nanma and I sung "The Wheel's On The Bus" to Demitri over and over while Dr. Yu was removing the stitches and D was really good. Dr. Yu told us that he felt like he was going to go blind because the stitches were exactly the same color as D's skin. He also said that he was gonna have that song in his head all day. As we were leaving Demitri said bye bye and thanked Dr. Yu.

The Night My Heart Stood Still

Last night was the scariest night of my life. Everything was normal and we were ten minutes from bedtime when Demitri pulled the television onto himself in our bedroom. I did not see it happen but the tv is on top of a dresser so he must have tried to climb up the drawers. Our tv is about 30 inches and must weigh fifty pounds and he was pinned under it. I lifted it off of him and screamed for Joe. Joe lifted him up and there was blood everywhere. I called 911 and they gave us some instructions to apply pressure and the firemen and ambulance were there in less than two minutes.

Demitri never lost consciousness and he was acting like himself but they wanted to take him to the only level 1 trauma center in our county just to be safe. So they tied him down to the neck board, which he hated and loaded him into the ambulance. All of our neighbors were outside and worried. Four of them actually offered to drive Joe to the hospital.

D cried for a couple of minutes in the ambulace but then we were singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and ABC’s and then he realized that he was IN an ambulance and that the sirens were for him. He thought that was super cool.

We got to UCI Medical Center at about 1015pm. They rushed us into the trauma room and there were about twelve people waiting for us. They put in an IV, they bagged him for urine, cut off his jammies and took a chest x-ray all within five minutes. Demitri was scared but Dora and Boots were on the ceiling so he was intrigued. They then told me that they needed a head cat scan and that he would need to stay still and would probably need to medicate him. He was being so good and he and I were singing that they asked if I would be able to keep him still. I said that we should give it a try. We went off to CT scan and I have never been so proud in my life. He and I went in and he listened to my directions and kept his eyes closed and layed so still and did not talk and they were able to get the scan. I was able to keep my self composed until this point. When we got back to the trauma room I went and locked myself in the bathroom and broke down. I could not believe what had happened.

The CT was normal so it was time to stitch up the laceration. First attempt with a local anesthetic was a no go. D wouldn’t even let them clean the wound. They then gave him a little bit of versed (sp?) to take the edge of. He giggled and giggled but still would not let them clean the wound. He was papoosed and would wiggle out of it. That’s when the head doc came in and discussed the only other option…sedation. I did not want to do that but there was no choice so I signed the papers. They gave him the amount for his weight and we waited ….nothing. A little bit more….no effect. Some more…..getting a little sleepy. Some more waiting and they started stitching and he woke up and some more meds. They gave D meds for someone almost twice his weight and he still was not all the way out. He has a high tolerance. We were released at almost 3 am. The staff fell in love with him. He named his nurse Uncle Bob. His name was not Bob lol. D said thank you and hi to everybody who walked in the room. People gave him toys, and teddy bears and books. He got to watch Shrek on his own personal tv and drink apple juice after his stitches.

Had a little more drama when we got home, Demitri vomited the apple juice that they had given him all over the bed. The hing that worried me was that there were chunks of blood in the vomit but I called and talked to the doc who said not to worry unless he kept doing it and was not acting like himself.

Demitri got 4 internal stitches and 4 external stitches. They need to be removed in five days. We have to go and see our pedi on Tuesday.

I will be doing a major childproofing of the house in the next few weeks. This was too close for my comfort. The nurse told me that they saw two kids die from tv injuries this year.

I can't believe that there is a Christmas tree up at the mall already. Demitri enjoyed looking at it and pulling at the balls while I kept my eye out for the security guards. I was sure they would come and chase him off.

What We Are Watching And Reading

These are Demitri's favorites this week.This DVD is actually pretty entertaining, especially for a kid like mine who is obsessed with fire trucks and fire men. I really enjoyed it the first ten times that we watched it.
This is a fun book. There are many verses to the song that I never knew and I don't mind singing it over and over. It is a sweet song and has a lot of interaction with the spider and her mama. It has become one of D's all time favs and it is too cute to listen to him sing along.

Strangers Love Him Too

Joe and Demitri were hanging at the beach this past weekend and a couple of girls snapped a couple of pics of them. The girls told Joe that they looked so cute together that they had to take the pictures. The girls then emailed the pics to Joe. I think it is pretty special that perfect strangers shower my boys with such attention.

I read this in Parents magazine and it made me realize how much Demitri has to look forward to in his life. Parents got the info from a British documentary called The Human Footprint, which compiled stats tracing the average life journey.

Playing Tim

Our next door neighbor is Tim (he is prolly in his mid 80s) and he mows his lawn every Sunday and Monday. Sunday is the front yard and Monday is the backyard. Tim is one of Demitri's best friends. D talks about Tim all of the time. We were at the hardware store and Demitri found this hedger and wanted to play with it. Joe wanted to let him, we thought he would play with it the aisle for a second or two but he took it for a ride thru the whole store. Here is a little bit of the footage.

BTW, I think that the employees were very, very happy when we paid for our purchases and left. Demitri made quite a scene when we told him that he had to stop mowing.

Nanma and I decided to take Demitri to the Aquarium for his birthday. Demitri had a fantastic time, especially since Daddy and Pa both took the day off of work to spend with him. Demitri loved all of the bright colored fish but his favorite thing to do was climb up a steep wall by the bird exhibit and jump into Pa's arms. We all had a great time and it was home to catch a quick nap before our birthday dinner with Kelly, Jeff and Ava.

Demitri picked his own outfit tonight and was very proud of himself. I tried to tell him that it did not match but he insisted on wearing it. This is a really sweet story but I love it for another reason. Whenever I read it to Demitri, I get showered in kisses. He is very generous with his smooches but I love how he is ready with them right on cue when the story calls for them. He is such a smartie pants ...just like you know who.

What We Are Watching

I turned on the tv a little early the other day for Sesame Street and there they were. The Teletubbies. My son's new obsession. He walks around the house saying TaTa and I know he means Teletubbies. These creatures scare me a little bit but they fascinate Demitri. Nothing has ever kept his attention like the Teletubbies do. He giggles and dances and even talks to the screen. He loves these guys. I think that the subliminal messages even got to me because I found myself buying a Teletubbies DVD at Toys R US. I wanted to put it back but it was cheap and I just couldn't. I guess I have fallen under the spell too.

Demitri's BFF is MIA

Demitri's best buddy, Samy, has been missing for a couple of days now. Demitri is sad as we wake up every morning and feed Sam and give him treats. Demitri is saying treats all of the time. He does not understand that Samy is gone. I hope that Samy is taking an extended walkabout and will be back, for D's sake.

Demitri adores fire trucks so when one pulled up next to us in the parking lot he was beside himself with excitement. He loved looking at all the hoses and nozzles. I love the look on his face in the last pic, he was very pleased with himself.

New Favorite Book

The Armpit is the New Belly Button

About six months ago D was obsessed with his belly button. He would pull up his shirt to show strangers his belly button and would expect the same in return from them. Yesterday he learned how to say armpit and is now fascinated with every ones pits. He really gets his head stuck up under your arm too. This kid is a strange one...he takes after his dad!

Cousin Ava's 5th Birthday

We headed off to Corona Del Mar for some fun in the sun to celebrate Ava's fifth birthday. Demitri is still scared of the water but if he has a hole near the water's edge he is content and will splash around. Demitri loves the beach. He calls it the "Big Sand".

BEWARE of bees at this beach!!! LOL, I think I may be the only person in the history of the world to have stepped on a bee at the beach and have gotten stung. Joe is still laughing at me.

The Circus

My good friend Dawn invited Demitri and I to go to the circus with her family. I was a little apprehensive because I know that Demitri is very sheepish when it comes to events like that. Dawn and I talked it over and decided that Demitri might surprise us because he would probably be so enthralled with all of the animals that he would not notice all of the people and the noise. SURPRISE...we were wrong. Demitri lasted all of two minutes in the circus and we spent the rest of the time meandering in the hallway. I felt so bad because we left at intermission and poor Alex, Dawn's son, wanted to stay and watch the rest of the show. Lesson learned... NO MORE BIG EVENTS FOR DEMITRI FOR A LONG TIME! Second lesson learned... if we do go to an event like that, take two cars so everybody does not have to leave at intermission. Thanks again to the R. family for inviting us.

Demitri did love riding next to Mia in the car, he was holding her hand at one point.

Lambert

All of a sudden Demitri is a little , ok maybe a lot , scared of things. We are talking about everyday things that he wasn't scared of before. I know that it is just a phase and he will get past it but Joe has given him a very fitting nickname. He is Lambert, our sheepish lion.

Santa Ana Zoo

Nana and I took Demitri to the Santa Ana zoo today. The highlight of D's trip had to be the monkey's and the tractors. He also liked the choo choo but refused to ride it around the zoo. He just liked to watch it go by. There was a petting zoo. Demitri liked to look at the animals but wouldn't touch any of them. He did think that they water fountains to wash your hands were pretty cool.

Wow, what a difference a year makes. I say this every time I do a comparison with pictures but I just can not get over how this kid is growing like a weed. Demitri was not down with the fireworks. We went to the neighbors house and no sooner than the first firework was lit that D started insisted that we return home. Oh well, maybe next year.
